| A How-To Guide:
Here on Edge of Existence, land is an indescribably vital resource that is sadly in limited supply. Other members will always be vying for prime real estate, either with coin or blade. It is up to the leader of your civilization to plant your flag on these lands and begin to build your empire. There are two ways to claim soil.
1. Conquest - To conquer a land is risky business, all sorts of uncertainty come when wandering into an unknown land. The indigenous people could fight back, or you might find the environment is too hostile, or foreign.
2. Auction - Purchasing land is a far less martial way of claiming a territory that has caught your eye. However, there is a trade off. Losing valuable resources in the acquisition of land may do more harm than good, leaving you vulnerable to conquest.
Bidding:
To bid for land all you must do is submit a certain amount of food, people, etc (the bare minimum will be outlined by an Officer). This will be subtracted In-Character as the cost of colonization. For example, trading two levels of food and gold will be explained as sending these supplies to your new colonies. Bids can also take place through IC contracts. In this case the bidder may offer up sanctioning/opening a trade with another country, supply of materials, alliances, positions of power, military numbers, etc.
Auctioning seems like a far less risky venture. Though after claiming a land, there is an IC month of waiting in which another civilization may outbid you and claim that land as their own. If sufficient progress has not been made after a month to colonize the land, it will be reopened for bidding.
Colonizing:
Purchasing land also gives you some control over the environment you will find yourself in, as well as warding away conflict for a certain period of time. Once having chosen which region of land you wish to own, you are given liberty to describe the landscape and resources available. An Officer will review the descriptions you have created before it becomes the official landscape for that specific area. It is also possible to sell your own land. If certain territories have become too difficult to hold and you fear that enemies may take it by force, you can choose to sell it instead. By auctioning off your land you make a profit.
